Eight Precautions You Need To Take After Lasik Surgery

To avoid complications, as with any surgery, you should always follow your doctor’s instructions. Fortunately, a LASIK procedure has a relatively rapid recovery period. There are, however, certain critical steps to take to guarantee good healing. Knowing what kind of follow-up care you’ll need will help you obtain better outcomes.

You can expect the following symptoms right after surgery:

  • Moderate tearing from your eyes
  • In your eyes, you have the sensation of a foreign body
  • Vision is hazy or blurry
  • Sensitivity to bright light has increased (that goes off after 24 hours of surgery)

What to do after LASIK surgery

After the surgery, take a nap for a few hours

After LASIK surgery, your doctor may advise you to relax for a few hours. Sleeping or simply resting with your eyes closed will help you feel better and recover faster.

Use the medication exactly as directed

You must use the eye drops as prescribed after the surgery. Your doctor might prescribe antibiotic eye drops to prevent infection, steroid eye drops to reduce inflammation, and lubricating eye drops or artificial tears to relieve irritation. Even if your eyes aren’t dry, you should use lubricating eye drops.

To avoid complications such as infection and flap dislodgement, use the eye drops exactly as directed. Between two medications, you should wait for five minutes.

Avoid rubbing your eyes

During LASIK surgery, a hinged flap is folded back to access the cornea and then replaced without suturing. If you rub or touch your eyes, the corneal flap may shift, causing serious difficulties. So, for at least two weeks after surgery, don’t rub your eyes.

Protect your eyes with dark glasses or sunglasses

UV rays can cause scarring and regressive changes in the eye. As a result, for at least a week after the surgery, you must wear dark sunglasses during the day. This aids in the healing of your cornea and protects your eyes from strong light.

Eye makeup should be avoided

After the procedure, you should refrain from wearing eye makeup for at least one week. Applying creams or lotions around the eyes is not a good idea. This eliminates the possibility of a corneal flap injury, foreign particles entering your eyes, or illness from contaminated cosmetic items.

Baths are preferred over showers

After the procedure, you must refrain from showering or swimming for at least two weeks. To prevent infections, avoid getting water, soap, or shampoo in your eyes. When drying your face, use a facecloth and try not to rub your eyes.

Avoid driving whenever possible

Avoid driving for at least two days after the surgery is what most eye doctors suggest. However, you may be told to avoid driving for extended lengths depending on how well your eyes are healing.

Contact sports and intense physical activity should be avoided

After your LASIK surgery, you should refrain from participating in any vigorous or contact sports for one month. If you feel comfortable, you can resume non-contact sports like golf or running. Avoid getting sweat in your eyes by wearing a headband and wearing protective eyewear.

In case of persistent pain, a sudden decrease in vision, redness, or sudden eye discharge, contact your doctor right away.

LASIK is regarded as a long-term vision correction procedure. Despite the high success rate of LASIK surgery, you may experience age-related problems including eye cataracts. It’s possible that you’ll need reading glasses in the future. Currently, no procedure will permanently correct your vision difficulties. You can keep your normal eyesight after LASIK surgery if you follow the above-mentioned tips.
